The news of the day is of the shooting in Christchurch, the point of difference is that the Gunman was 42 year old wheelchair bound Shayne Simes. From all accounts, Simes had advanced muscular dystrophy (a usually terminal muscle wasting condition - although he found a cure).
I'm surprised he stayed in his chair given the recoil of a shotgun & .308!
I'm not blaming the Police at all but why didn't the AOS just creep up on him and taser his wobbly ass... scared they might kill him?
Flashbangs, beanbags, even teargas would have disabled him (yes, pun intended).
In saying that:
He did shoot an AOS member and a civilian...
Update - OK, so he had somekind of head injury... boohoo... they still let him have weapons... hang on... they let a brain damaged loner keep high powered weapons? oh right... the wheelchair...
The first is the New Zealand Search engine (NZS.com).
You've probably heard their ad. on the radio, it starts: "Hey Keewees, I'm an American search engine..."
All in an exaggerated American accent and then goes on to mention a mispronounced Maori place name or obviously wrong local knowledge.
The theme of the ad. being; Why rely on a AMERICAN search engine to find what you need in New Zealand.
In short they are saying; New Zealand = good, American = bad.
Have you spotted my dichotomy?
The problem is the domain name. Domain names from New Zealand end with ".co.nz". domain names from America end with ".com", as in "NZS.COM".
So they registrered (and paid for) an American domain for their New Zealand website, while telling New Zealanders we should use a New Zealand search engine!
Good own-goal dumb-asses!
Now, on to my second matter.
Matariki... a celebration of a season change, that's fine.
There are lots of others. Spiritual matters aside, it had a purpose.
But a new public holiday?
How come I get the feeling that companies like Interflora & Hallmark have rolled out their tame Kaumatua to endorse a new gift buying/giving excuse?
On the face of it, this appears to be the usual power struggle. We have the incumbent President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (this guy and his cronnies are conservative, not George Bush conservative, think Adolf Hitler conservative) and the previous Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi Khameneh (liberal... somewhere between George Bush and Josef Stalin)
But there are so many subtle twists and sub-text in this story I keep whispering, "I see dead people", to myself.
Ahmadinejad won again, Mir-Hossein claimed huge and blatent vote-rigging.
Not exactly new stuff, but what has surprised many are the violent reprisals Ahmadinejad has unleashed on supporters of his opponent, who have held huge protest rallies about the alledgedly stolen election.
Ahmadinejad trucked in goons called Basij, these Basij are beating (literally to death) as many protesters as they can, but they are also at the hospital and arrest the injured protesters that come in for medical attention.
There are video clips of these hire-hoons shooting students, beating protesters and taking sniper positions on roof tops... not to forget, helicopters spraying a "burning liquid" on the million+ protest crowds.
Many embassies have opened their gates to allow Iranians to take refuge there - Serious stuff.
But before we get too "warm & fuzzy" about Mir-Hossein, let's just put his "style" in perspective:
Mir-Hossein is more of a moderate than Ahmadinejad: more selling oil so the suckers West stop experimenting with alternatives... why risk going back to making rugs when they can buy Jets and Yachts and gold bullets... Islam doesn't really pay the bills... so a few less women wear Burkhas... no biggie...

I listen to this guy... well actually, I listen to the Radio Station and have breakfast, mainly because I like the presenter on after him. If I'm lucky there'll be King, Perego, Coleman or even Hill on instead.
Marcus Lush... I have quite enjoyed the television shows he has "fronted" about trains... (Classic Lush; he holds up rail as the only thing that can save NZ yet he readily admits the rail network in NZ is fatally flawed - the gauge (width) of the tracks are too narrow to be useful).
Take, for example, his discussions around newly discovered British song-bird Susan Boyle: initially he gave lengthy (and typically self indulgent) monologues about how 'the common [wo]man had won', yet like a lot of other commentators he was circling her waiting for the most opportune moment to 'sink the knife in'. When that time arrived, he used the tools at the disposal of a radio host (tone of voice, inflection, dramatic pauses) to mock the homely deva, all the time carefully dancing around in mock disdain of his nay saying peers.
I've heard him do that sort of thing many times. He will warn callers about "bad language for a morning show", giving the air of moral superiority, then will slip in nasty, narcissistic and needless comments.
Let's not even get started on his dodgey political views...
